Trains are returning to modernised line in Kladno

The reconstruction of the line across the largest city of the Central Bohemian Region has progressed. Správa železnic will resume traffic between Kladno and Kladno-Ostrovec stations this evening, the first trains will go on the tracks tomorrow. For the time being, they will use one track, and the double-track operation will be operational in less than a month. The construction is part of the line modernisation project Praha – airport – Kladno.

The reconstruction of the line section from Kladno to Kladno-Ostrovec began in November 2022 and is currently approximately two-thirds complete. The builders have rehabilitated the railway substructure and superstructure and built new bridge structures, which, like the entire line, are ready for the laying of the second track. In mid-May, the road underpass in Petra Bezruče Street was also opened, replacing the existing railway crossing. Two new platforms are already in operation at Kladno station.

Further improvements await passengers from 20 August, when double-track operation will start in the entire modernised section. Lifts to both platforms at the Kladno město stop will be put into operation by the end of the holidays.

Work is continuing on the replacement of the crossing in Wolkerova Street with a road underpass. The new pedestrian underpass at Kladno station will be completed in the middle of next year, and work on the new station building and the entire forecourt, including the P+R car park, will continue until the end of 2026. The project also includes the construction of the overhead contact line and the traction substation, but their commissioning will depend on the completion of the modernisation of the subsequent sections from Praha-Veleslavín.

The main benefits of the construction are double-tracking and electrification of the line, increasing its capacity and line speed, building new platforms with barrier-free access and, finally, connecting railway and bus transport by creating a transfer terminal at the Kladno město stop.

The contractors are companies EUROVIA CZ, STRABAG Rail and Elektrizace železnic Praha. The estimated total cost of the construction amounts to CZK 4,686,819,513.

The project is co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund under the Programme Transport 2021–2027.
